Mozilla Firefox sucks!
I have been using Firefox for a long time now as an alternative to Internet Explorer. But this damn thing wants to install updates almost everyday. And after fighting with the "Remind me later"-Button I figured out that it is easier to just press the "Update Now"-Button and having your freedom again for at least some days.
But this browser sucks because it is so damn slow and takes too much ram which slows down the whole system. I don't know!
Yesterday I installed Opera and this browser feels much better, smaller and faster. Ironically I had the same impression when I first used Firefox years ago.
Dear Browser-Developers - a browser is a browser is a browser - nothing more and nothing less!

Hi Manni,
for this reason I recommend Epiphany (if you’re a Linux user). Gecko-Engine. Very fast. Just a few add-ons preinstalled (the most important) and best bookmark organizer I’ve ever seen. One task - One Software. This is the Gnome-Spirit. Hope to see you again.
Have a nice day

Hey Daniel,
great to hear from you!!! Thanks for the info, but unfortunately I had to switch to Windows again because of some recent Flash projects. -
Hi Manni,
you might also want to have a look at K-Meleon, http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/. It is Gecko-based, too, but has a smaller memory footprint.
Best wishes from Würzburg,
Joachim

I use Opera very long time. Since those times when it was shareware. And the desire to pass on FF has not arisen never!
-
Hi Manfred,
I did the same a week ago (my Task-Manager told me FF consumes about 800MB!!!!!!). I was a really big FF-Fan but the browser is getting more bloated with every release…
Opera feels way faster :)

Hey Joachim, long time no see! :)

Firefox is getting worse with each update. Consuming too much memory, I think they are called “memory leaks”. Browser freezes, have to re-start. Will be switching back to IE soon if they don’t solve this problem.
-
Ther`s a hint for you : user Internet Explorer!!!! The only reliable browser there is.
-
Nick, Internet explorer is one of the most vulnerable, unreliable, and bloated pieces of shit there is for a browser.
Firefox consumes 50MB of memory for me, and then an additional 10MB per tab.
at the time of writing, internet exlporer 6 uses 20mb of memory which rises quickly (a few hundred KB per second!) (this is on my Windows XP SP2 box using IE6.0)
On my linux box (Debian 4.0 Etch), Iceweasel (trademark-free version of firefox from the Debian developers instead of Mozilla themselves) is extremely stable. It never crashes. I use one box for gaming and one box for secure web browsing and web development.
I suggest firefox, opera, dillo, or epiphany. Dillo is lightweight, and extremely fast, while epiphany is slightly faster than firefox, but not as fast as Dillo. Since I have decent boxes, IceWeasel and Firefox are my favorites.

IE7 (This bloated piece of shit as you called it) is loading website pages almost instantaneously compared with FF that takes 2 min to load a single page! Not to mention when I try multiple tabs; FF just freeze! I dont know what they did but the last version 2.0.0.11 is broken! Last good version was 2.0.0.2! I thinks there are problems with memory leaks and also java script support!
BTW: In the first few days after I installed FF everithing was fine but with every day that passed pages were loading slower and slower..! I tried to reinstall FF, unistall addons and scripts but with no luck!
I never had a problem with IE7 IE7Pro addon! It displays any site without errors! Consumes about 100-150MB of memory but who cares I have 3 GB! So..I will stop experiment with other browsers! Why change a thing that works? -
Firefox has never consumed over 60mb for me. The only reason firefox would use that much is from loading shitloads of tabs, or running too many instances of firefox.
Firefox never froze on me, and it loads pages the same as it does in IE7. Want to know why? Because it uses the same internet connection. The only reason one browser will be slower than the other is because of the bloatware the devs put in it making the loadtime of the program itself, and the rendering of the webpage slower than molasses.
Browsers are nearly like operating systems in the sense that they all suck. Pick one, get over your horny zealot stage, and use it. Firefox > IE in my opinion for many reasons.
Some reasons are:
Open source
Less packed with bloatware
Many freeware and open-source extensions (Whereas atleast 50% of IE7’s addons/extensions are shareware.)
Loads faster than IE.
Supports Linux, BSD, OS X, and Windows. Amazing. IE can be run on Linux with some work, but why take the time?Anyhow. If you want a lightweight browser with less memory consumption, try Dillo. There are versions of it for windows, as well as linux (and I think bsd)
-
I have also found FF using circa 800Mb ram after running for 24 hrs. The amount of ram it would eat would not be proportional to the number of tabs that were running, but to the length of time the program had been open. That = memory leaks.
I’m now using Opera as my main browser - much quicker, less ram hogging, prettier. Downsides - more cpu intensive sometimes, flash doesn’t work well, no Firebug developer console.
The only reason I use FF occasionally is to debug some code using firebug. Unfortunately not all webapps/sites support Opera, so I still switch back to IE occasionally.

Exactly the same feelings happening to me, since my favorite and first-choice browser is Firefox. The very first time I used Firefox, it was like an evergreen leopard, but now it became almost comparable with a snail. Any solutions from the developers side?
-
I was a firefox junkie, but now i’m going to stop with it.
It consumes too much memory period. I always have my browser open and it goes up to 400MB in ram, and i’m a guy who opens 10-30 plus windows at a time. As it reaches around 8, it gets dreadfully slow. I think i’ll try khameleon
-
I used Firefox a few years but now it seems to have lost it. I use it on more computers and I noticed that he installation of the most recent updates fails on every ssytem, making the browser inoperable. It gets in a loop during update installation and only a hard stop in the task manager will solve the problem.
The mozilla update routine sucks anyway. That’s it, I’m back to IE7. Not too bad after all. -
uh yeah anyone saying that mozilla is slow or taking up to much memory is dumb…go to about:config and change the settings you need to. my friend ran his on dial up n had it loading pages at dsl speed, n my other one was complaining about the memory usage too but he changed some settings and guess what? it doesn’t use much at all now. jus google your problems n ull most likely find your solution
-
brad, great comment. thank you! you are so smart. such a brilliant fresh idea!

I used FF and when I stopped the updates the computer stopped working. The dial out for broadband had a constant error message, and because I thought it was a Window XP update problem I reloaded the entire computer. It happened again 2 month later, but knew it must be FF. Deleted it from my computer and everything started work again.
I think they should stop all these updates!! -
firefox slow? lmao have fun with IE7

I think all four of the main browsers — Opera, IE, FF and Safari — are very good. I’ve never had any REAL problems with any of them. I’m using IE7 and like it just fine. It has a few quirks to it that make me prefer it to the others, although I used FF for a couple of years (prefer the earlier versions that were plainer and simpler). Opera is also very good. Moving back through previously loaded pages in Opera is lightning fast and I don’t know why the other browsers don’t have that feature.
One of my least favorite things with Firefox is the way it handles and makes HTML dumps of bookmarks — too bulky. IE’s HTML dump (of bookmarks) is considerably smaller, for instance. Also when trying to import IE bookmarks into FF3 it froze over and over.
Again though all four of the main browsers, including also Konquerer and some others that don’t get much play, are very good. But I think IE is underrated I guess because it’s the default and it’s by Microsoft.

Sorry, Opera’s the best browser. Ah well. Can’t help people who refuse to help themselves and get used to a better browser. Have fun with your “Firefox religion”, bugs and security vulnerabilities.
Next time I see someone complain about Firefox taking up 400-800MB I’ll just laugh and say use Opera. Ver 9.51: 60MB ram and better in every way, other than not being open source. Of course some would consider this a disadvantage, since large OSS pretty much ALWAYS sucks. The list of sucky OSS gets longer and longer all the time…
